Front doors of Presson Art Gallery in Downtown Monroe, North Carolina

the building

Presson Gallery proudly calls home one of Monroe’s most storied buildings, located in the heart of the Monroe Downtown Historic District. Our building has witnessed over a century of transformation, from a thriving hardware business to the vibrant arts destination it is today.

From Hardware to Heritage

Originally built in the early 1900s, the structure began its life as part of Monroe’s bustling hardware industry. Known locally as Presson Hardware, it was tied to the broader history of Monroe Hardware Company, a regional supplier that played a key role in building communities across the Carolinas.

In 1927, a devastating fire swept through the original Franklin Street store. But true to Monroe’s spirit, the business rebuilt stronger, expanding into new warehouse spaces and storefronts that still define downtown Monroe today. The building that houses Presson Gallery became part of this enduring legacy.

Part of Monroe’s Historic District

Our location is included in the Monroe Downtown Historic District, added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1988. The structure reflects early 20th-century commercial architecture, with original details that connect visitors to the city’s industrial roots. Neighbors in this district include other landmarks like the Belk-Bundy Building and the Secrest Building, together preserving the charm and history of downtown Monroe.

A New Chapter: Art and Community

In recent years, the building underwent careful restoration as part of Monroe’s downtown revitalization efforts. With support from local grants and the dedication of current owner the Purdy family, the space was reimagined—preserving its architectural character while creating a welcoming home for art, creativity, and community connection.

Today, visitors to Presson Gallery can experience more than just the art on our walls—they can walk through a space that embodies the spirit of renewal, resilience, and transformation. From the hardware tools that once filled these rooms to the compelling works of art that inspire today, our building tells a story of Monroe’s past, present, and future.
