Introducing Monica Filotas, the Artist Behind Macraz: A Journey Through Fiber Arts

We are excited to welcome Monica Filotas, the creative force behind the Macraz brand, to Presson Gallery.

We are excited to welcome Monica Filotas, the creative force behind the Macraz brand, to Presson Gallery. Monica’s artistic journey is one of innovation, cultural storytelling, and the perfecting of ancient crafts through modern techniques. An international artist, Monica has been creating with yarn since the age of nine, and today, she transforms these humble fibers into dynamic sculptures that speak to her Mexican heritage.

From Mexico City to the World

Monica’s journey began in Mexico City, where she completed her studies in Industrial Design at the Universidad Nuevo Mundo la Herradura. Her creative talents led her to work at the prestigious Museum of Modern Art of Mexico, where she gained invaluable experience in the art world. However, Monica's entrepreneurial spirit soon took her in a new direction, and she founded her own design studio specializing in the development of trade show stands. Her studio’s designs won two consecutive “Best in Show” prizes—an early testament to her exceptional eye for both form and function.

A Global Artist with Deep Cultural Roots

Monica’s artistic career is truly international. She has held private exhibitions in Bogota, Colombia, and London, UK, captivating audiences with her intricate crochet sculptures. As a member of the Surrey Sculptors Society in the UK, Monica has also contributed to a vibrant sculptural community, gaining recognition for her innovative use of yarn and fibers.

From exploring yarns, looms, and dyes to mastering felt embroidery and fiber utilization, Monica has drawn on global traditions to refine her craft. Every piece she creates is a reflection of both her Mexican heritage and the diverse artistic knowledge she has acquired throughout her journeys.

The Art of Macraz: Sculpting Identity Through Crochet

At the heart of Monica’s work is her deep connection to Mexican culture. Under the brand name Macraz, Monica crochets pieces that come alive as sculptures of Mexican figures, each embodying a unique aspect of her heritage. Her work goes beyond traditional crochet, turning yarn into an expressive medium for storytelling, identity, and cultural preservation.

We are thrilled to showcase the art of Macraz at Presson Gallery. Monica Filotas’ sculptures invite you to experience the beauty and richness of Mexican culture through a contemporary lens, while also celebrating the universality of fiber arts across the world.
